Things can buy in Sapa

Brocade
Sapa, the small tourist town of Vietnam’s northwest region, reminds us of a wildly beautiful area where travellers can gain great trekking experience while discovering the rich culture of ethnic minorities groups. The wet markets and souvenir shops here are also the perfect places for ones who are longing to buy local unique gifts.

Brocade

Visiting Sapa market, you can easily get lost in the maze of colorful brocades. It is amazing when knowing that only a one-span piece of brocade can take up to two weeks of sewing. Local girls may spend months just completing one dress, as the clothes represent their skills and extreme patience. Nowadays, in an effort to satisfy the complicated requirements of customers, there are two kinds of brocades available in the market: mass-produced and handmade ones. Mass-produced brocade is brighter with more designs, while the handmade one is darker with more harmonious pattern, containing the high traditional value. Brocade can be made into clothes, dresses, bags, backpacks, purses, scarfs, and even bed coverings.

Lufthansa airlines suspends flights to Vietnam

Lufthansa airlines

Lufthansa German Airlines has announced its suspension of flights to Ho Chi Minh City as from March 25 after 23 years operating in Vietnam.

Lufthansa representative office in Vietnam will also close within the next few days. However, Lufthansa‘s sale service will continue to operate as normal and provide tickets for customers on air routes from Bangkok (Thailand) and Singapore to Germany.

Vo Huy Cuong, Deputy Head of the Civil Aviation Authority of Vietnam (CAAV), said Lufthansa announced its suspension of flights to Vietnam two weeks ago.

“The German airlines cited fleet restructuring as the primary reason leading up to its decision,” he added.

It’s hard to evaluate the efficiency of Lufthansa via HCM City-Germany route, Cuong said, adding that the national flag carrier - Vietnam Airlines – is effectively exploiting the route.

“Vietnam Airlines even has plans to increase flights to Germany,” he noted.

Tying the knot Dao style in Sapa

Typical handicraft of ethnic minorities in Sapa

Handicraft in Sapa
Until the 1980s, most of the mountain populations in Vietnam used to produce nearly all their everyday life objects. Clothes, basketwork, metal and wooden objects, jewellery, pottery, etc. were made locally according to techniques that were often specific to an area or an ethnic group. These objects are still made today for family use and occasionally offered for sale.

The Tay grow cotton, spin it, weave it, and dye it to make the traditional blankets for the wedding dowries. The Hmong grow hemp and use its strong fibres to make their clothes, which they dye with indigo.

In certain villages, people raise silkworms to make the beautiful silk thread they use to embroider their clothes. The Dao (Mien) women and the Hmong make veritable pictures with their incredibly precise embroideries. Lots of traditional fabrics can be found in the Sa Pa and Bac Ha ethnic markets. Most of the patterns embroidered by the Hmong and the Dao or woven by the Tay and the Thai carry a meaning. They often symbolise a baby, a tree, a bird, a snail, the moon, etc.
